這裡說到的「galleons」，是16～18世紀西班牙使用的武裝帆船，之後被其他國家借鏡啟用，於是船隻的技術發展開啟了列強的「大航海時代」。

Montezuma又被稱為「蒙特蘇馬二世」或「年輕的蒙特蘇馬」，他是中美洲阿茲特克帝國的最後一任統治者，由於西班牙征服者「Cortez」入侵，再加上帝國內的彼此征戰，最終造成阿茲特克帝國的傾滅。

在這整段歌詞裡，描述了阿茲特克帝國的國情。擁有古柯葉、財寶等富饒的物資，同時也有犧牲的儀式，當然還有許多流傳後世的傳奇建築，如阿茲特克帝國首都特諾奇提特蘭的主要廟宇
Templo Mayor。

在這裡說到的「she」，有好幾種解釋。第一，在這首歌曲寫作的階段，歌手Neil Young剛好與他的前女友Carrie Snodgress分手，所以這段歌詞寫到的失落愛情，可以算是他自身的影射；另外一個解釋是Cortez的妻子Doña Marina，在Cortez進入中南美洲阿茲特克帝國時，蒙特蘇馬賞賜了他20個女奴隸，其中的Doña Marina為Cortez生下了第一個兒子。

這裡的Cortez，指得是Hernán Cortés，西班牙15～16世紀的征服者。Hernán Cortés在1519年對南美洲進行了拓荒和搜尋，並且利用優勢的武力在1521年造成阿茲特克帝國滅亡。當然，阿茲特克帝國的滅亡不僅僅只是外敵入侵的原因，疾病、內部戰爭也是主因之一。
